Company Overview

Accentus was born in late 2002 under the auspices of Dartmouth College’s Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network. As an academic and research commercialization enterprise, Accentus continues to have strong ties not only to Dartmouth but with other leading institutions.

Accentus is the result of Dr. Edward P. Childs, Jr. work during his tenure as a Dartmouth graduate student enrolled in Dartmouth’s Electro-Acoustic Music program. James Perkins, a Wall Street veteran with substantial senior level experience in the technology and software industries, partnered with Dr. Childs to bring Accentus to realization in the marketplace.

The company has pioneered auditory display in the Sales & Trading segment of the financial services industry. Traders in this technologically-demanding industry suffer from extreme visual overload and invest heavily in gaining a competitive advantage through technology. To date, market traction has been strong and traders are excited about the Accentus Auditory Display. Seven of the Top Ten Wall Street firms are customers or product development partners.

Accentus LLC is the world leader in auditory display technology. Based in Hanover, New Hampshire, the Company’s groundbreaking, patented Auditory Display Solution presents data using music-like sound, which improves comprehension and decision making in the workplace where visual data overload is common.

Auditory display technology surpasses visual-only data display in monitoring applications, allowing individuals to use their ears in addition to their eyes to perceive data. With the Accentus Auditory Display, traders can now efficiently interpret more market data, improving trading opportunity response and reducing errors.

THE SCIENCE

What is Auditory Display? Visual display is digital data for your eyes. Auditory display is digital data — non-verbal sound — for your ears. Because of its rich array of qualities, sound can rapidly convey meaningful information for many concurrent data streams.

Auditory Display of data combined with visual display of data is superior to the traditional visual-only approach, delivering more consistent monitoring, better identification of opportunities, fewer misses of threats and improved productivity.

Auditory Display is the first in a new generation of new tools for extending the human perception of data — multi-sensory human interfaces. Auditory display is the display of data through sound, leveraging the underlying human faculty of auditory sensory perception, which evolved early in human history. The science and technology is new, it has rapidly gained importance in recent years for a number of reasons, including:

  • The overuse of visual displays in real time data-intensive situations
  • The availability of real time sound generation capabilities on standard desktop, laptop and mobile computing systems
  • The body of psychological evidence, which suggests that the human ear is superior to the eye for processing certain kinds of information
